DBS

The effects of deep brain stimulation on the articulation of words
The results of a specific French study (Wednesday, 12 May 2004)

It is well known that motor function is improved considerably by deep brain stimulation at the level of the subthalamic nucleus (DBS), except for a few aspects related to speech, such as lowering of the voice. A group of French researchers studied the effects of DBS on dysarthria (problems in the articulation of words) in 7 patients before and after surgery with electrodes turned on and off and during levodopa effects (in “on”) and after they had worn off (in “off”). General motor function improved considerably, whereas the improvement in the ability to move their lips was modest and so was the loudness of their voice. Moreover, the ability to articulate words did not improve, on the contrary the intelligibility of speech worsened in two patients.
